Job Overview
Our client is seeking an Environmental Specialist I to support environmental health programs in Farmville, VA. This is a hands-on field role requiring outdoor work across all seasons, including inspections, investigations, documentation, and public engagement. The position is part-time, capped at 29 hours per week, over a 6-month engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Investigate animal bites within established timelines; collect, prepare, and ship lab samples per protocol (Rabies Prevention & Field Surveillance)
- Conduct inspections of marinas, campgrounds, tourist establishments, swimming pools, hotels, and migrant labor camps for regulatory compliance
- Support the Onsite Sewage & Water Program - water well construction inspections, permit application review, and site evaluation
- Maintain accurate documentation in state environmental databases; manage case records, correspondence, and daily scheduling
- Respond to public inquiries in a timely manner
- May supervise staff and conduct performance management activities (if designated)
- Assist with emergency response as directed by the Governor's declaration or VDH
Required Skills
- Strong written communication and report composition skills
- Data entry and records management proficiency
- Proficient in basic computer software programs
- Ability to conduct field inspections and investigations outdoors in all weather conditions
- Problem-solving skills and ability to work with diverse cultural populations
- Valid State Driver's License required
Preferred Skills
- Experience in environmental health support
- Familiarity with CAD drafting or permit design
- Knowledge of state environmental regulations and databases
Location & Work Model
On-site field work in Farmville, VA. Mobile worker designation possible - includes field work and telework at alternate locations when not in the field or during emergency closings. Periodic office visits required for meetings and training.
Engagement Details
Part-Time contract engagement, 6 months duration. Hours capped at 29 hours per week.
