About the job

Design Engineer - Actuation Systems Position Overview

The Design Engineer will support the development, design, analysis, testing, and certification of hydraulic and electromechanical actuation systems and components. This position will work across new product development and sustaining engineering efforts, taking designs from concept through qualification and production support.

The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical design experience using CATIA or SolidWorks, combined with hands-on knowledge of actuators, hydraulic components, mechanical power transmission, and/or electromechanical systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and support new and existing hydraulic and electromechanical actuation products.
  • Perform mechanical design, modeling, drafting, and design improvements using CATIA V5/V6, SolidWorks, or comparable CAD software.
  • Complete development, design, analysis, testing, and certification assignments for new products and product modifications.
  • Design and evaluate mechanical components including actuators, gears, splines, screws, housings, and hydraulic components.
  • Coordinate with engineering, manufacturing, experimental/test, supply chain, and product support teams throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Work directly with suppliers to resolve technical, manufacturing, and design issues.
  • Support production by troubleshooting engineering problems and implementing design changes.
  • Evaluate materials, manufacturing processes, finishes, tolerances, thermal considerations, and structural requirements.
  • Support component and system qualification testing, including vibration, performance, environmental, and functional testing.
  • Prepare and present technical information, design recommendations, and engineering findings.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Experience designing mechanical, hydraulic, or electromechanical products.
  • Strong proficiency with CATIA, SolidWorks, or similar 3D CAD software, including modeling and drafting.
  • Understanding of mechanical design fundamentals, manufacturing processes, materials, tolerances, and component testing.
  • Experience working with cross-functional engineering and manufacturing teams.
  • Strong technical problem-solving, organizational, communication, and presentation skills.

Preferred Technical Experience

Experience with several of the following is highly desirable:

  • Hydraulic actuators, including locking and non-locking designs
  • Hydraulic valves, reservoirs, accumulators, pumps, and power packs
  • Linear and rotary electromechanical actuators
  • Ball screws, roller screws, and ACME screws
  • Gears, splines, and planetary gear sets
  • Electric motors and motor controls
  • Electronic/mechanical enclosures
  • Mechanical manufacturing and machining processes
  • Engineering materials, finishes, fits, and tolerances
  • MMPDS material properties and S-N/fatigue curves
  • Vibration analysis and vibration testing
  • Thermal considerations for mechanical and electromechanical systems
  • Qualification and certification testing
  • Aerospace or other regulated-product certification requirements
  • KISSsoft, LabVIEW, MATLAB/Simulink, and Mathcad
