About the Role:

The Air Force Test Center is looking for a Full-Time Supervisory General Engineer (NH-0801-03) to work at the 896th Test Support Squadron (896 TSS/RNME) at Eglin Air Force Base.

In this position you will serve as an Instrumentation Engineering Section Chief with the responsibility of overseeing a team of engineers and technicians that applies engineering principles to plan, design, and integrate executable and sustainable airborne instrumentation solutions in support of Developmental and Operational Test and Evaluation.

Location: Eglin Air Force Base, Florida

Typical 2026 salary range: Salary $89,508 - $138,396 per year based on experience (includes locality)

"If your current basic salary is within the band, but above the stated VOP, your basic salary will not be reduced if you are selected for the position."

Telework Information: Eligible for situational telework only, including Emergency and Office of Personnel Management (OPM) prescribed "Unscheduled Telework"

Travel Requirements: Up to 25% travel possible

Direct Hire Authority: NO 6-MONTH WAIT! Recently retired and/or retiring from MILITARY service ARE eligible for immediate appointment for AFTC positions. The 180-day waiting period has been waived for AFTC to hire recently retired and/or retiring service members.

Desired Skills:

At least 5 years of progressive experience leading technical teams in a test and evaluation environment desired; with particular emphasis on applying modern technology such as AI or other digital tools to elevate team training and qualification processes.

At least 5 years of progressive experience managing team capacity and workload desired; with particular emphasis on balancing employee workloads, minimizing multitasking, and aligning day-to-day task execution with overarching program schedules.

At least 5 years of progressive experience driving continuous process improvement desired; with particular emphasis on leading lessons-learned programs and utilizing modern database or AI search tools to make historical technical data accessible to junior engineers.

Major Duties:

Exercises supervisory personnel management responsibilities, to include planning work, assigning tasks, evaluating performance, and recommending appointments, promotions, or reassignments.

Plans, organizes, and oversees the daily activities of the section by developing long-range goals, establishing internal policies, and optimizing personnel and equipment resources.

Serves as a senior technical consultant and expert in airborne instrumentation systems engineering, providing authoritative engineering advice and technical recommendations on advanced concepts.

Represents the organization in various installation, test, and functional forums, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with internal flights and external partners.

Manages and evaluates the life cycle development of systems, ensuring all T-2 modifications and airborne instrumentation projects meet cost, schedule, and supportability criteria.

Leads a disciplined engineering approach to maintain Operational Safety, Suitability, and Effectiveness (OSS&E) throughout the life cycle of modified test systems.

Develops and implements new technical applications or experimental processes to resolve unique, complex, and high-priority engineering problems.

Reviews, prepares, and presents comprehensive oral and written reports on project statuses to all levels of leadership and stakeholders.

Identifies the need for special test support projects, establishes milestone schedules, and performs active follow-up actions to resolve engineering issues.

Mentors, coaches, and appraises engineering staff to support their career progression, cultivate long-term professional development, and meet mission requirements

Qualifications/Requirements:

PROBATIONARY PERIOD STATEMENT: (Required) - For All Positions

Drug Testing:

This is a designated Drug Testing Position

Security Clearance:

Must be able to obtain and maintain and "Top Secret" security clearance

Education Requirements:

Professional engineering degree at the bachelor's level from an ABET Accredited College or University

DAWIA Certification:

Must be able to obtain and maintain an APDP Level 2 (Practitioner) certification in Test & Evaluation within the standard 24-month grace period.
