Job Description:

Ranked No. 1 in innovation for 12 consecutive years, Arizona State University is one of the nation's largest and most inclusive public institutions. ASU is committed to advancing a dynamic, productive learning experience at scale. Enterprise Technology develops and operates the platforms, services, and tools that strengthen the student experience and enable innovation across the university.

The Senior Web Site Developer Engineer is the service owner and technical lead for ASU's managed web hosting ecosystem. The role provides operational ownership of managed Drupal hosting, domain name system services, content delivery and web application firewall services, SSL certificates, deployment pipelines, traffic management, and related platform operations. It serves as a technical escalation point for Enterprise Technology web teams and leads improvements in platform reliability, security, documentation, governance, and developer experience across hundreds of university websites.

By strengthening enterprise web platform operations, this position supports ASU's transition from EdTech to TechEd: moving beyond isolated tools toward learner-centered, interoperable, AI-augmented digital experiences. The engineer builds institutional AI capacity by incorporating approved AI-assisted workflows where they meaningfully improve quality, security, reliability, accessibility, documentation, and developer experience. AI-assisted work remains subject to human review and university requirements for privacy, security, data governance, accuracy, and responsible use.

Position Salary Range: $78,000.00 - $94,050.00; DOE

Essential Duties:

Platform and Infrastructure

  • Manage and support ASU's managed Drupal hosting services, including platforms such as Acquia, DNS, CDN/WAF, SSL certificates, and related web infrastructure.
  • Support website launches, migrations, decommissions, and cloud application setup, including access, permissions, deployment processes, and environment configuration.
  • Monitor platform health, performance, availability, and security; identify issues and coordinate with appropriate teams to resolve them.
  • Support operational processes for provisioning, deployment, monitoring, security, and ongoing platform maintenance.

Reliability, Security, and Process Improvement

  • Troubleshoot platform and application issues, respond to service incidents and security events, and coordinate resolution with technical teams.
  • Work with security, infrastructure, and application teams to address vulnerabilities, improve reliability, and reduce recurring issues.
  • Improve deployment processes, platform tools, automation, and self-service capabilities to make it easier for development teams to manage ASU websites.
  • Create and maintain documentation for platform standards, procedures, troubleshooting, and service changes.
  • Use approved automation and AI-assisted tools to improve development, testing, documentation, troubleshooting, and other routine work while considering security, privacy, accessibility, and accuracy.

Technical Leadership and Collaboration

  • Serve as a technical resource and escalation point for Enterprise Technology web engineering teams on hosting, deployment, performance, security, and related platform issues.
  • Provide guidance and support to team members, promote sound development and operational practices, and share knowledge across Enterprise Technology and the broader university web community.
  • Communicate technical information, risks, decisions, priorities, and service impacts clearly to technical and nontechnical audiences while managing deadlines and competing needs.

Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Knowledge and experience in backend or full-stack web development.
  • Experience with DevOps practices and production environments.
  • Experience with managed hosting or cloud-based application environments.
  • Knowledge of web performance, monitoring, troubleshooting, security, and incident response.
  • Experience with automated testing, Git or similar source control, and collaborative development tools.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues, prioritize work, and drive issues through resolution.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience developing, administering, and supporting Drupal websites and web applications.
  • Experience with PHP, JavaScript, and modern web development frameworks such as React.
  • Experience managing web security and delivery platforms, such as Cloudflare, including DNS, SSL/TLS, traffic management, bot protection, and DDoS mitigation.
  • Experience working with cloud technologies and services, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (Google Cloud Platform).
  • Experience with software development practices such as version control, CI/CD, automated testing, and test-driven development.
  • Experience working with APIs, web services, system integrations, databases, and SQL.
  • Knowledge of web accessibility standards and practices, including WCAG, with a commitment to creating inclusive and accessible digital experiences.
  • Experience using scripting and automation to improve processes, increase efficiency, and reduce repetitive work.
  • Experience monitoring and supporting production applications, including performance monitoring, logging, alerting, incident response, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience using tools such as Jira, Confluence, GitHub, or comparable platforms for project management, collaboration, development, and documentation.
  • Experience providing technical support, coordinating incidents, or taking ownership of production applications and services.
  • Experience mentoring colleagues, leading technical initiatives, and promoting quality through code and design reviews.
  • Experience applying artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning through professional work, education, or applied projects.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools, such as GitHub Copilot, AWS Kiro, or similar technologies, to support software development, testing, documentation, troubleshooting, and automation.
  • Demonstrated ability to thoughtfully evaluate AI-generated or AI-assisted work, including considerations related to accuracy, security, privacy, accessibility, bias, fairness, and institutional requirements.
  • Familiarity with TechEd principles and practices, including learner-centered design, interoperability, inclusive technology, AI-augmented platforms, trust, and institutional AI readiness.

Working Environment:

  • Activities primarily take place in a standard, climate-controlled office environment and may involve extended periods of sitting, standing, or moving between office spaces.
  • This role involves regular use of a computer (desktop and/or laptop), including a keyboard and mouse.
  • Effective communication and proficiency with a variety of technologies are essential for collaboration with the broader team.
  • Regular responsibilities may require the ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
