The District Traffic Engineer serves as the principal authority and primary point of contact for all traffic activities within their assigned District.

This position is in District 61 and reports to the ADA Operations.

This position may be filled as a Detail to Special Duty.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering plus one of the following:

Three years of licensed engineering experience; or

Seven years of professional engineering experience.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTIONS:

A master's degree in engineering will substitute for one year of professional engineering experience.

A doctorate degree in engineering will substitute for two years of professional engineering experience.

Advanced degrees will substitute for a maximum of two years of professional engineering experience.

There is no substitution for licensed engineering experience.

NOTES:

Engineering experience gained while licensed as a professional engineer will be accepted as licensed engineering experience. Engineering experience gained after earning an ABET-accredited degree and prior to earning a professional engineer's license (e.g., as an engineer intern applicant, engineer intern, or equivalent) will be accepted as professional level engineering experience.

Applications will be accepted from persons licensed to practice professional engineering in states other than Louisiana. If one of those applicants is selected for the position, he/she will be required to obtain a Louisiana license prior to appointment. The hiring agency will verify that all licensing requirements are met.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties

The District Traffic Engineer primary duties:

  • Directs district traffic engineering operations, including traffic studies, work assignments, staff performance reviews, personnel actions, and data collection/analysis.
  • Reviews and finalizes traffic engineering recommendations involving traffic signals, roundabouts, flashing beacons, signs, pavement markings, speed limits, parking restrictions, and roadway improvements.
  • Manages field crews and resources, including the Signal Shop, Sign Shop, and Striping Crew; oversees schedules, budgets, staff meetings, and quality inspections.
  • Reviews construction and traffic control plans to ensure compliance with department standards, including roadway intersections, driveways, permits, and modifications to existing traffic devices.
  • Oversees Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and investigates innovative traffic solutions to improve safety, efficiency, incident management, and traffic flow.
  • Provides technical and legal support, including responding to litigation requests, giving depositions and expert testimony, investigating crash locations, and recommending safety improvements; also oversees outdoor advertising and directional-sign programs.
  • Supports overall district management and emergency preparedness, contributing to budgets, planning, operational efficiency, department policies, traffic engineering meetings, and emergency response coordination.

This role requires decisive leadership, strategic budget management, and strong communication skills.

Position-Specific Details:

Compensation:

This position has a Special Entrance Rate (SER) of $4,627.20/biweekly.

Additional compensation may be considered with extraordinary qualifications in accordance with State Civil Service Rules and DOTD policy.

Licensing Requirements: Must have a current Louisiana Professional Engineering License.

Appointment Type: This position is open to only current permanent classified DOTD employees. This position may be filled as a promotion or detail to special duty.
